Trekking to Choquequirao has been one of the most intense and special experiences of my trip in Peru. For four days and three nights we toured breathtaking landscapes, from the deep canyon of Apurimac to the majestic ruins of Choquequirao.
Coolest. Trek. Ever.
This tour was truly spectacular. Private for just me and my girlfriend because no one else signed up with similar dates. Doing Salkantay (the secret back way) to Inka Trail we had NO ONE on our trail days 2–3, and very few due to spacing on the Inka.
With an unexpected break between jobs, I decided to book a very last-minute trip to Cusco — right in the middle of peak travel season. Although I've visited the region and Machu Picchu several times before, I opted for a private tour this time, since I was traveling solo.
We went for the 3D/2N Lares Trek, ending in Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu. It was a wonderful experience. Our guide, Cris, was very calm, gentle and knowledgeable. He explained a lot, ranging from natural information to ancient and modern history of Peru.
We did the 2 day Humantay and Salkantay route. We had a great time! First of all, what a beautiful walk, spectacular scenery. Communication with Sam Travel was very good — we were given an orientation the day before and told to bring everything we needed.
We had a fantastic time with Liz Montesinos as our guide on the two day sacred valley Machu Picchu tour. She was professional, kind, knowledgeable and made the experience very memorable. She brought us to a wonderful community along the way.
I cannot recommend Sam Travel enough. Jose our guide was incredible. His knowledge of the history and sites is encyclopaedic. He could be a history professor, but everything was conveyed with such enthusiasm.
What You'll Experience on the Trail
Wiñay Wayna
The agricultural terraces of Wiñay Wayna cover half the mountainside, and despite its steep steps it is still a favorite of many people who take on the trail. Found just 2.5km away from Machu Picchu, the site is named "Eternally Young" in Quechua — the indigenous language of Peru.
Inti Punku
Quechua for "Gate of the Sun", Inti Punku is your first glimpse at Machu Picchu, and the end of the uphill on your way to the citadel. This was the main entrance to Machu Picchu and the only way to get this view is to earn it by walking the Inca Trail.
Machu Picchu
By far the most well known UNESCO world heritage site in Peru and the pinnacle of many people's visits to South America. This is where you wanted to be.
